Status: Completed
Following a fire at a substation in Ashford Kent, significant damage was caused to the facility, resulting in power outages across the surrounding area. During the subsequent remedial works, a critical component — the corona ring — was accidentally damaged by a forklift operating on site. As this component is essential for the safe operation of the substation, the system could not be brought back online without it.
Due to the long lead time for a replacement corona ring, the contractors approached us to carry out a specialist repair.
Using a highly precise approach, we carefully removed the damaged section, reshaped it, and TIG welded it back into the original ring. Once the repair was complete, the welded area was meticulously cleaned and polished to restore a continuous, smooth surface, matching the original profile and performance requirements.
This specialist repair eliminated the need for a full replacement, saving months of downtime and allowing the substation to be returned to service far sooner than anticipated.
